It was a cold, March morning standing at the bus stop before the sun had risen and the song kept playing over and over in my head? “This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine, this little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine…”. A few weeks later and it is still there like a haunting melody over and over. A powerhouse, folk spiritual song which awakens something INSIDE me instantly.
Was it divine, the CREATOR, God… or just a diddy that wormed its way into my subconscious without my knowledge? I don’t actually know but I do know that my inner self was calling my attention to something. I needed to go INSIDE to explore! I would be bold-faced lying if I said there weren’t any contributing factors throughout my lifetime that would cause me to question what I’m about to sheepishly admit but something keeps calling. So here we go, please don’t JUDGE; I mean to offend no one!
I’ll pack up my Roman Catholic guilt from my upbringing and don my Kevlar suit to ensure the skean of my Irish Catholic Grandmother’s eyes cannot penetrate me from heaven to earth. With all the curtains drawn, cloaked in my rubber protectant I confidently admit that I question my belief in God.
I’ve gone this far why turn back right?!? Immediately, I see a vision of DIVINE FEMININE…
I’ve come to believe it is your own inner compass that guides you to your enlightened self. The logical self speaks to me and says CREATOR of all mankind must be a woman since only she can reproduce. But she also needs man to fulfill this act. So who is CREATOR? Honestly who knows…
Tell me you haven’t found complete solace in walking barefoot in the grass, holding a beautiful stone, staring up at the starlit sky with any of the many gorgeous moons of the lunar cycle or sat by the beach listening to the waves crash the shoreline basking in your own inner silence. This is connecting to DIVINE FEMININE whether you are female or male this is our connection to MOTHER EARTH. These cathartic experiences with the earth and the Universe lead me to believe that it is impossible to say that all that beauty could have been created by one higher power.
So I say we are all CREATORS, sharing in this beautiful gift we’ve all given each other throughout history. Generation after generation has shown GRATITUDE, MANIFESTED more, looked INSIDE to become ENLIGHTENED and shared that with each other to embrace their own LIGHT.
LIGHT…that song; back to it I have to find out why that song was the one which connected. So of course I turn to the internet to listen to the whole song. The most popular rendition was one from Odetta Holmes; later I learned that she sang a rendition of “This Little Light of Mine” alongside the Boys’ Choir of Harlem on The David Letterman Show in 2001 as a tribute to the tragic events of 9/11. I now knew there was a message the Universe was calling my attention too! I do recall that time and how scary the world had become and still is today with each tragic event that has occurred since then. What I remember most though was how much common humanity, UNITY and kindness was shared between complete strangers.
Why is it that we need tragedy to EMBRACE ourselves and each other?
What my soul was calling me INSIDE to discover was that there is so much more beyond the events which occur in our daily lives and how these events IMPACT others. Some of us get so caught up in earning, acquiring and striving to be the best that we disconnect from our truest self. What we NEGLECT to recognize is the journey of ourselves, the lessons to be learned through the journey of others, but most importantly we forget to share our LIGHT. There is always someone, somewhere out there questioning life just like you.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us…”
-Marianne Williamson
The fact that I heard this song in the early morning hours of darkness and on repeat at night when I would close my eyes further validates the quote above.
So I say we need to embrace our LIGHT, share it with each other and TOGETHER we will illuminate the WORLD with a LIGHT brighter than any heavenly power. No matter what or who you believe in you must first believe in the POWER you hold within. No matter how much we are frightened to EMBRACE that LIGHT we must for the future of mankind continue to live our lives letting our LIGHT SHINE!
